However, his name was cleared afterward information technology is revealed that helium was framed by Captain Julia Millfield (Kim Delaney), who believed (incorrectly) that he sexually assaulted her sister when they were in high cultivate.[16] In the flavour 13 installment "Child's Welfare", Simon reveals to Benson that atomic number 2 is planning to marry a woman named Tracy (Nicole Beharie), with whom he has a daughter and a stepson; he called his daughter Olivia after Benson. Relationships [edit]
Elliot Stabler [edit]
Hargitay has characterised Benson and Stabler's kinship As "rattling complicated".[8] Her assessment is that:
Sometimes information technology's identical a great deal like crony and baby, and I think the reason that they're so imminent is that they part a Passion of Christ for their jobs and for the people. They get a reciprocating honor for nonpareil another. I think that the average lifespan of an SVU detective is four geezerhood because of the difficulty and stress involved. They've been doing it for longer than that, so they feel like-minded they'Re in their own world almost. There's also sexual chemistry betwixt them, it's so soused and layered. Multitude ask me if they'll always get together—and people wish that, and sometimes I recollect even Olivia wants that—but I don't think that bequeath ever happen.[8]
Baer agrees that a romantic relationship between the deuce is unlikely, though commented: "You never commode say never".[8]
Hargitay has stated that her favorite SVU tantrum occurs in the season 7 episode "Fault", when Benson is faced with the opening of losing Stabler: "Lou Baseball field Phillips [a bloody kidnaper] has a gun to Elliot's heading. I'm negotiating [with him to drop the gun]. It was a painful, piping-bet scene. Elliot and I have to admit what we average to each some other... Helium is everything that [my lineament] Olivia has. Indeed this was where we really got that to pay off."[24] In an sequence in which Stabler goes cloak-and-dagger to charm an plover-like-smuggling ring, Benson shows upwardly at his sign of the zodiac and tries to talk of the town him unfashionable of it; when they are interrupted past Stabler's targets, she undresses and pretends to be a working girl.[25]
Benson takes IT hard when Stabler resigns from SVU (offscreen) in the 13th flavour undoer, "Scorched Earth", and takes a while to warm adequate to her new partner, Snick Amaro. Benson frequently mentions Stabler in both a professional and ain context; she tells the squad's newer detectives what Stabler would practise in a given situation, and says more once that she is "getting ended someone".[26] In the Harden 22 episode "Return of the Prodigal Son", Benson and Stabler see each other once more first in 10 years when Stabler's wife Kathy (Isabel Gillies) is severely injured in a gondola bombardment apparently meant for Stabler. Benson is forced to keep Stabler, WHO is forthwith working in Rome in an organized crime task force, out of the investigating. They have a brief, quietly soulful conversation in which Benson tells him how hurt she was over the way He left SVU. When Kathy dies of her injuries, however, Benson puts her rancour aside to help oneself her grieving friend get justice for his latterly wife.[27]
Upon reviving her relationship with Stabler, Benson recognizes that he is suffering from send-traumatic stress upset consequent from the bombardment and Kathy's death. When she tries to talk to him about information technology, however, he becomes defensive and tells her to "pull out". She in the end joins Stabler's children in staging an intervention for him. He again rejects Benson's set about to help him, but outset blurts out that he loves her in front of his children.[28] [29]

By the end of the episode, she breaks risen with Moss.
While Benson has solitary been pictured in relationships with men, she has, according to lesbian entertainment website AfterEllen.com, "attracted a large tribade following". Fan speculation exists over alleged unisexual tensity betwixt Benson and Assistant District Lawyer Alexandra Cabot (Stephanie Butt), which Baer admits to indulging: "We take the lover sites. We know that people are into the Alex-Olivia thing. All the codes are in there."[30]
In the middle of time of year 13, Benson enters into a relationship with a new public prosecutor to the DA's Office, Executive ADA David Haden (Molest Connick Jr.). Hargitay has said that Connick, who is a Quaker of hers, improved the prove to a Thomas More romantic advanced stance. "This is a home run connected so many an levels," she said. "The exhibit is very fortunate to have Harry's extraordinary talent, and I'm lucky because I get to work with my friend. I suppose Olivia couldn't have asked for a improved companion to take her through a new stage in her life history and career." Haden and Benson begin their relationship at the death of the instalment, "Official Story". In the episode "Search Ground", she decides to take IT easy with Haden, claiming she needs clip to see if their relationship will last. That night, they end up quiescency together in her flat. In harden 15, Benson girdle with Cassidy as she recovers from her imprisonment by a serial rapist. A few months after she returns to work, they mother a new apartment together. They break up in the episode "Downloaded Child", however, upon realizing that they need various things. They notwithstandin stay on on good terms, especially later Benson gives him the braveness to bear witness against Gary Dolan (William Sadler), the man World Health Organization sexually misused him as a youngster.[34]
In "Chicago Crossover" and "They'll Have to Go Through Me", Benson strikes up a friendship with Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) of the Chicago Police Section, despite their differing methodologies when information technology comes to resolution crime. Upon the conclusion of their joint operation, the two share drinks before Benson returns to Untried York.
IT is advisable passim season 17 that Benson is in a relationship with Capt. Ed Tucker (Robert John Burke) of Internal Affairs. In "Manhattan Transfer", they are forced to confirm their relationship when Tucker ou is accused – by his own first cousin, a priest – of existence complicit with a sex trafficking ring that has ties to Frailty and the Broad-minded Church. Tucker is one of these days cleared, and he continues his family relationship with Benson. In flavor 18, Tucker tries to convince Benson to retire with him, though at the conclusion of the episode "Succeeding Chapter", Benson realizes she is not fit to do and then, as being a cop and a bring fort are parts of who she is. Equally a result, Benson breaks up with Tucker at the end of the episode "Chasing Theo". Smooth though their relationship does not work out, however, Benson is still saddened when Wash up commits suicide after being diagnosed with an unserviceable mastermind tumor.[35] [36]

When Warner asks Benson if she had been raped, she replies, "It was the closest I've ever come."
In season 10, Benson is seen troubled with now beingness a victim of sexed rape herself. She is attending group psychotherapy, something she has non distributed with anyone just Tutuola. Even as he is about to rape her, she breaks independent, handcuffs him, and holds him at point. When He taunts her, she loses control and beatniks him within an inch of his life with an branding iron retinal rod. She is reclaimed by her fellow detectives moments later, and Cragen puts her on mandatory leave so she can recover.[37] She returns to work in the following episode, "Captive Lives", which takes stead ii months tardive, just is still obsessed by the experience. I get letters saying, 'I want to perform the right thing like Olivia. I want to be strong like Olivia. My friend did this, but I didn't practice it because of Olivia.' For me, when a television bear witness has that rather positive effect along young people, it is dandy. I think it is a good thing that we are shedding light along darkness. I think it is a skillful thing to make teenage girls aware.[39]

For the male role – Stabler – the finalists were Tim Matheson, John Slattery, and Christopher Meloni. Meloni and Hargitay had auditioned in the final round together and aft the actors left, there was a moment of dead silence, subsequently which Wolf blurted away, "Oh intimately. There's no doubt WHO we should opt – Hargitay and Meloni." The duo, who Wolf believed had the unblemished interpersonal chemistry from the forward prison term he saw them together, were his first option. Garth Ancier, then head of NBC Amusement, agreed, and the rest of the panel accumulated soft their assent.[61] Hargitay trained as a rape crisis counsellor to prepare for the role of Benson.[62]

In May 2009, after the show's tenth season, Hargitay and Meloni's contracts terminated when they were reportedly making $375,000[65]–$385,000 per episode.[66] During negotiations in Apr for a new concentrate, the duo attempted to find a percentage of the show's profits as past high-profile Law &ere; Order actors had done in the past. It was rumored that NBC threatened to replace Hargitay and Meloni if they persisted in their demands.[67] However, two months later it was officially according that both their contracts had been renewed for two more long time.[66] When the thirteenth mollify was about to air, initial reports indicated that Hargitay would appear in only the archetypical 13 episodes.[68] However, NBC president Bobber Greenblatt later clarified that she would be in all episode of the season.[69]
